From 22 to 24 October, the Buenos Aires Convention Centre (CEC) hosted a new edition of Ekoparty, Latin America’s largest hacker conference. As part of this event, in which we actively participate every year, we received recognition for Via Libre’s achievements.
Since 2014, Ekoparty has presented the Trajectory Award to leaders who leave their mark, and for the first time, they recognised an organisation with this honour. Beatriz Busaniche and Enrique Chaparro were recognised by the hacker community and the security ecosystem as part of the 25th anniversary of the Via Libre Foundation.
‘They have given voice and substance to the idea that technology should accompany democracy and vice versa. Our community will always support them,’ said Federico Kirschbaum, one of the founders of Eko.
Their website said: “The Trajectory Award recognises an organisation that has become an essential reference point in the defence of privacy, security and freedom of expression in the digital environment. For more than two decades, Enrique Chaparro and Beatriz Busaniche, at the helm of Fundación Vía Libre, have consistently, knowledgeably and courageously held fundamental debates on technology, digital rights and privacy. Fundación Vía Libre has promoted public policies, supported the technical community and defended those who responsibly investigate and report vulnerabilities, helping to build a fairer and safer digital ecosystem for all. For their track record, clarity and tireless commitment to fundamental freedoms in the digital age, Ekoparty celebrates and recognises their contribution with the 2025 Trajectory Award’”.
In addition, in this edition we participated in the space ‘A 1 bit de ir en cana’ (One bit away from jail). Margarita Trovatto, a member of Fundación Vía Libre and the Citizen Initiative for the Control of the Intelligence System (ICCSI), participated in the panel ‘Cybersecurity vs. National Intelligence,’ alongside Eduardo Ferreyra (ACIJ – Civil Association for Equality and Justice) and José Joel Peña Llañes, (PhD, lawyer specialising in data protection). During the panel, the current confusion surrounding state regulation of cybersecurity and cyber intelligence was discussed, as well as the differences between them.
At Fundación Vía Libre, we will continue to participate in this valuable space for the Latin American region. This recognition fills us with pride and reaffirms our commitment to protecting the information security community.
