Via Libre in Mila: Summer School on Responsible AI and Human Rights

Margarita Trovato, member of Fundación Vía Libre, was selected to participate in the 3rd cohort of the ‘Summer School on Responsible AI and Human Rights’.

During 5 days, 40 attendees from different countries and backgrounds gathered in an intensive learning programme involving theory, practice and skills development on responsible AI organised by the Quebec Institute of Artificial Intelligence (Mila) which is recognised worldwide for its important contributions to AI. Today, the Mila community has the largest concentration of academic deep learning researchers in the world.

‘The classes were dedicated to thinking about how to use it responsibly, always understanding that it is not neutral and that it is still a tool of power,’ said Margarita. Magisterial classes, workshops and networking spaces were some of the activities that took place during the week.

The profiles of those who attended came from different geographical locations and different areas of work, such as research, medicine, law, IT and social sciences, in line with the objective of creating a space for interdisciplinary learning and a cross-disciplinary approach.

As highlights, Margarita mentions the possibility that this programme provided to think about the impacts of AI from different disciplines as well as “understanding the different actors involved at a global level and the importance of dialogue between us, for example, from civil society we have to work with industry to introduce the human rights perspective. The key is to cross actors and cross disciplines”.

The Summer School on Responsible IA and Human Rights is an initiative of Mila and the University of Montreal to whom, from Fundación Vía Libre, we would like to thank for this opportunity.
