Interest in teacher training received an immediate response: in just three hours, 600 teachers enrolled in the course Foundations of AI to Expand Cultural Horizons. Given the high demand, the Ministry of Education of Córdoba decided to increase capacity to 1,500 participants, so registration remains open.
Foundations of AI to Expand Cultural Horizons
Artificial intelligence is already part of everyday school life. It appears in assignments, in study practices, and in how knowledge circulates. In this context, understanding how it works—and what its use entails—is key to addressing it critically in the classroom.
The course offers a pathway designed for teachers who want to go beyond the everyday use of these tools. Throughout the lessons, participants explore how language models work, what data they are trained on and why, as well as the ways in which they can produce biased responses or present incorrect information as if it were reliable. Other challenges that AI poses for teaching are also addressed.
The program combines accessible content with practical activities aimed at experimenting, analyzing AI-generated responses, and developing pedagogical criteria of one’s own. The goal is not to promote uncritical adoption, but rather to provide tools to decide when and for what purposes to use these technologies from a situated perspective.
An initiative with a rights-based approach
Regarding the initiative, Beatriz Busaniche, president of Fundación Vía Libre, stated:
“At Fundación Vía Libre, we are committed to ensuring that digital technologies serve people’s rights. In this context, this new initiative, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education of Córdoba and FAMAF, is a step forward in building capacities to address the adoption and use of machine learning systems in schools as a means of empowering people in the face of the advancement of Artificial Intelligence. We propose to understand, analyze, evaluate, and equip people with capabilities in relation to these technologies, and for that reason we developed this course to bring fairer systems into classrooms. Based on the principles of free software and access to knowledge, Vía Libre supports education to promote accessible and inclusive technologies.”
The initiative is organized by Fundación Vía Libre, FAMAF (UNC), and the Ministry of Education of the Province of Córdoba, with support from Mozilla Firefox.
