On Wednesday, August 13, Fundación Vía Libre will participate in the panel “Appropriations, uses, and risks of social media by children and adolescents.” We were invited by La Defe — a national agency dedicated to advising and protecting the rights of children and adolescents in both physical and digital environments — to contribute our critical perspective on public policies and technology.
Beatriz Busaniche, president of Fundación Vía Libre, will be one of the speakers in Part 1: “Between regulations, protection, and rights,” where current and emerging international and regional regulatory frameworks around minors’ access to social media will be discussed. The panel will review experiences ranging from restrictive proposals to self-regulation approaches, aiming to identify balanced paths that ensure protection without limiting rights.
This first session will focus on:
- The current state of regulations on access and data protection for minors on social media.
- Risks related to privacy, mental health, and overexposure.
- Innovative regulatory alternatives and the importance of going beyond formal rules to foster safe and participatory environments.
This panel is part of La Defe’s ongoing work on digital environments, building on previous recommendations and statements from the agency as well as the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child’s General Comment No. 25.
👉 Hybrid format: The event can be attended in person or followed via live streaming.
