Beatriz Busaniche will take part in the hybrid roundtable ‘From Surveillance to Governance: Re-centering Human Rights in the UN AI Agenda’, a side event organized by Access Now during the UNGA 81 High-Level Week. The roundtable will take place on September 21st from 9:00 am to 10:30 am CST.

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) High-Level Week is scheduled to take place from September 22 to September 28, 2026, in New York. Presided over by Khalilur Rahman, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, this yearʼs high-level gathering convenes world leaders under the driving theme: “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.” The week serves as a critical junction for 193 member states tasked with repairing fractured geopolitical relationships, reinforcing multilateralism, and navigating deep structural transformations in global governance.

This event will bring experts together to explore practical strategies to confront the normalization of surveillance, understand how digital rights can serve as the first defense against AI-related abuses, and identify actions stakeholders can take to achieve these goals.

This roundtable has the objective to explore concrete, actionable ways in which each stakeholder can contribute to oppose the normalization of surveillance. Experts will also discuss how to charter a way forward to reaffirm digital rights as the natural first line of defense against the abuses of AI technologies.
